Dreamhost upgraded the version of php to 7.2 which broke the version of phpBB that we are using (which is obsolete anyway). They did tell me it was going to happen, but sent the emails to an address I no longer monitor as I get too much spam on it.
I have downgraded the version of php back to 5.6, and it now appears that it is working again.
Unfortunately the upgrade of php will be compulsory in a few weeks so we had better plan the upgrade of phpBB3 and migration of the forum PDQ
